BIOTECHNICA 2009
(6 – 8 October)
Following its successful premiere in 2008, the Biomanufacturing Symposium will be making a repeat appearance at this year’s BIOTECHNICA. Targeted specifically at developers and manufacturers, this one-day event will provide an effective framework for communication between the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors. The Symposium will be organized by Capgemini Consulting in collaboration with Deutsche Messe, Hannover. In a series of brief lectures leading experts will address current biomanufacturing issues and discuss potential solutions with the attendees. In 2009 the focus will be on the following topics: collaboration between drug developers and manufacturers; the importance of process validation in the early stages of development; and special factors relating to the development of biosimilars.
Collaboration strategies
The collaboration between developers and manufacturers of bio-pharmaceuticals raises an important question: To what extent is manufacturing know-how a prerequisite for successful technology transfer? Three leading experts (working in the fields of product development, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology respectively) will join forces to answer this question and discuss other issues relating to strategic partnering, licensing, outsourcing and capacity planning.
Process validation
Complex development processes (i.e. those involving various parties) raise further questions: How important is the early integration of validation tools during the development of new active substances? Should validation and monitoring be applied during the initial method development stage? These questions have a decisive impact on reproducibility and on the success of planned technology transfer and biomanufacturing. Such issues will be on the agenda during the second block of lectures at the Biomanufacturing Symposium.
Biosimilars
Biosimilars pose a serious challenge to process developers. Due to their special status (somewhere between generics and innovative bio-pharmaceuticals) these follow-on products occupy a grey area. Which expression systems can be used to create protein agents, and what impact do these systems have on clinical trials and regulatory procedures? This question will be discussed during the final plenary session of the Biomanufacturing Symposium.
The Biomanufacturing Symposium will take place in the Convention Center (CC), Hall 3B, at the Hannover Exhibition Grounds on 7 October (11.30 a.m. to 6.15 p.m. The conference language is English. Attendees are required to register in advance. Further information on the program and the relevant terms and conditions can be found at www.biotechnica.de/60331
