TeliaSonera Finland chose Nokia Siemens Networks to extend its 3G network

TeliaSonera Finland and Nokia Siemens Networks have signed a contract on the deployment of a 3G radio network on the 900 MHz frequency. The new network will extend TeliaSonera Finland’s 3G coverage in a cost efficient way. It will enable mobile broadband services in the remote areas of the country and help further increase service quality in bigger cities.

Nokia Siemens Networks delivers a full WCDMA/HSPA 900 radio network system to TeliaSonera Finland, including its award-winning, energy-efficient Flexi base stations and high capacity RNC 2600 radio network controllers. The new network will support fixed-mobile migration in the rural areas and save operational costs for the operator.

“Our customers demand high-speed high quality 3G service wherever they are. Nokia Siemens Networks’ WCDMA/HSPA 900 solution will enable us to extend 3G coverage to the more remote areas of the country in a cost-effective way, extending the latest mobile broadband services to a growing number of customers,” said Esa Rautalinko, CEO, TeliaSonera Finland.

“Our cooperation with TeliaSonera goes back a long way. We are extremely happy for this great opportunity to provide additional quality and coverage with state-of-the-art technology to TeliaSonera Finland and its customers,” says Jan Lindgren, Head of TeliaSonera Customer Team, Nokia Siemens Networks.

Nokia Siemens Networks is the supplier of the world’s first commercial WCDMA/HSPA network in the 900 MHz band. The 2.5 fold increase in coverage compared to WCDMA/HSPA in the 2100 MHz band and the reduced number of base station sites enables reduction of overall network deployment costs in rural areas by up to 60-70%. The Nokia Siemens Networks solution comprises of the market leading Flexi base station together with unique software features and industry’s narrowest WCDMA/HSPA carrier bandwidth for retaining service quality for GSM users while deploying a fast, high quality HSPA layer on the same band.

WCDMA900
Nokia Siemens Networks was the first company in the world to provide a complete end-to-end solution to introduce WCDMA in 900 MHz and 850 MHz frequencies and to manage co-existence of GSM and WCDMA in the same frequency band. The Nokia Siemens Networks WCDMA refarming solution is built on the WCDMA 900 variant of the industry leading Flexi Base Station together with flexible co-siting solutions, and it provides a comprehensive set of features supporting co-existence of GSM and WCDMA in same frequency band. Due to the significantly increased coverage compared to WCDMA in the 2100 MHz band the WCDMA networks can be built with 65% less sites leading to the reduced total cost of ownership of network.
