Platinum Sponsors
London, UK, 16 July 2009 – RSA® Conference, the world’s leading
information security conference group, today announced that Nick
Leeson, the rogue trader whose unchecked risk-taking caused the
biggest financial scandal of the 20th century with the collapse of
Barings Bank, is confirmed as the closing keynote speaker at the tenth
annual RSA Conference Europe. The Conference takes place from 20th
-22nd October 2009, at the Hilton London Metropole Hotel, UK.
The collapse of Barings Bank and the chaos caused in the Singaporean
money market in 1995 – and Nick Leeson’s role in it – is one of the
most spectacular debacles in modern financial history. As a closing
keynote speaker at RSA Conference Europe 2009, Nick will talk candidly
about what happened. In the aftermath of the AIB trading scandal in
New York, the collapse of Enron and Worldcom and most recently the
failure of many international banks as a result of the global economic
crisis, Nick will provide fascinating insights into the continuing
failures of senior and middle management at large corporations who
still fail to protect shareholders and customers.
Linda Lynch, RSA Conference Europe Manager, commented: “RSA
Conferences have historically attracted speakers who provide a unique
take on the IT security industry and we’re delighted that Nick Leeson
has become the latest addition. The recent banking crisis was caused
in part by a poor approach to information management and security. No
one is better positioned to provide perspective on those incidents
than a man who was literally at the centre of one of the single
biggest banking fraud incidents in the history of the UK.”

Philippe Courtot, Chairman and CEO of Qualys will keynote on Cloud
Computing and the changes it brings to the enterprise security
landscape. Courtot said: “Cloud computing is emerging as a viable
alternative model to traditional information security practices while
also offering the possibility of more effective and efficient
information security capabilities at a lower cost.” In his keynote,
Courtot will discuss these disruptive changes on organizations’
information security programs and security practitioners.
RSA Conference Europe brings together leading security experts,
vendors and enterprise end-users to discuss the latest trends and
issues behind the ever-changing nature of information security
threats. The Conference delivers its educational content through
keynotes, tutorials, and 70+ sessions across 10 tracks including
Business of Security, Developers & Applications, Governance, Hosts,
Hot Topics, Networks, Professional Development, Research & Threats,
Security Services and Sponsor Case Studies.
Every year, RSA Conference is built around a different theme which
highlights a significant historical example of information security.
In 2009, we celebrate the influence of Edgar Allan Poe. Poe was
fascinated by cryptography, which he often treated in his journalism
and fiction writing, including the concealment of anagrams and hidden
messages in his own poems. His famous story – “The Gold Bug” – centres
on the solution of a cipher, which turns out to be a map to hidden
private treasure.
