Sprint Nextel Prepared for Tropical Storm Ernesto Impact on Carolina and Georgia Coasts

Even as Tropical Storm Ernesto begins its approach on South Florida this evening, Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S) technicians and engineers are hard at work finalizing preparations for the storm’s potential impact to coastal Georgia and the Carolinas. Earlier this evening, the National Hurricane Center posted a hurricane watch from the Altamaha Sound, Ga., to Cape Fear, N.C.

Throughout the four-state area expected to bear the brunt of the storm, Sprint Nextel has mobilized resources including additional generators, fuel, manpower and other network materials. “Sprint Nextel’s team is prepared for the next potential impact of Tropical Storm Ernesto as it moves northward,” said Joel Garner, south region vice president, Sprint Nextel.

“Once we ensure the well being and safety of our employees, our dedicated crews work around the clock to assess any damage and restore services allowing customers to communicate with their family members or to contact emergency services by voice or text messaging or their Nextel Walkie-Talkie,” said Garner.

In addition to Sprint Nextel’s on-going investment in improving its networks’ resiliency, the company has purchased additional portable generators, COWs (Cell on Wheels) and SatCOLTs (Satellite Cell on Light Trucks) which can be deployed as part of the company’s disaster response and recovery.
