A controversial political mockumentary that some considered too harsh to release during the G.W. Bush administration, A New Tomorrow will be available to international audiences for the first time in a multi-pronged digital platform. IndieFlix and amazon.com will be the first outlets to release Carey Corr’s directorial debut, on August 18, representing a triumph for the filmmakers and a victory for free-speech advocates.
A New Tomorrow, starring a renowned cast of character actors, revolves around the vicious campaign maneuvering of Christian Conservative Republicans and spacey liberal Democrats during the small-town mayoral race of Venison, USA. The film skewers Bush and big oil, the war in Iraq and the general dysfunction of the U.S. political system, through eccentric characters and over-the-top commentary.
A New Tomorrow debuted at the Seattle True Independent Film Festival in May of 2007. Due to the premiere’s popularity, the festival added two additional screenings, becoming the only film in the festival that year to win an encore. A New Tomorrow went on to win the Seattle True Independent Film Festival’s Urban Archipelago Award.
The tagline of A New Tomorrow, “Sex, Drugs, Rock, Religion and Politics: A Mockumentary About Voting,” emphasizes that there are no sacred cows in the film, which has served to both increase its notoriety among cineastes, and cause some reluctance on behalf of distributors. David Greenberg of IndieTalk.com, one of the project’s early supporters, states, “A New Tomorrow is a really welcome breath of acid social criticism that arrives just in time for the homestretch of the 2008 Presidential campaign.” The uncompromising nature of the project, however, has also stalled its original planned release. “We hope that by introducing the film to audiences via digital platforms,” says Corr, “they will be enabled to form their own opinions and not accept at face value the wishes of others who feel that it may be too dangerous to view.”
The filmmakers of A New Tomorrow’s have now scheduled their digital release platform to take advantage of President Obama’s transition from campaign “rock star,” as Corr suggests, to President. “Already there is plenty to satirize. We’ll keep our eye on the news and allow the world to dictate a possible follow-up,” Coor advises.
A New Tomorrow was produced by Mockumentary, Inc. The film’s website is www.anewtomorrowmovie.com.
