FBI-LEEDA and LifeLock, Inc. Are Bringing Free Identity Theft Summit to Boulder

As Federal Trade Commission (FTC) statistics show the number of identity theft complaints to be at an all-time high, LifeLock, Inc., and the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association (FBI-LEEDA) are bringing their successful, interactive Identity Theft Summit training to those who are battling the crime on the front lines. This free summit, hosted by Boulder Police Chief Mark Beckner, will be held on Thursday, September 10 at the Boulder Police Department for local, state and federal law enforcement officials.

Part of a national touring series being offered under partnership between the FBI-LEEDA and LifeLock, the summit will help to educate law enforcement participants about the latest investigation strategies and technologies, as well as details about the various threats today’s consumers are facing.

The latest FTC report shows the number of identity theft complaints has grown from 230,000 in 2000 to more than 1.2 million complaints in 2008. The state of Colorado ranks 10th in the nation for most complaints filed related to identity theft, and is first in the nation for most complaints filed related to identity fraud. According to the most recent FTC Report, the Greeley, Colo. area ranks 11th in the nation for identity theft complaints, and the Boulder area ranks 15th in the nation for complaints of identity fraud.

“In the face of this growing crime, law enforcement officials are often forced to track criminals who operate across multiple borders and jurisdictions or who operate behind the virtual walls of the Internet,” said LifeLock CEO Todd Davis. “Improving communication and promoting information-sharing between law enforcement communities is a critical step in combating this crime.”

The LifeLock and FBI-LEEDA Identity Theft Summit will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on September 10 at the Boulder Police Department, located at 1805 33rd Street. To register, visit the FBI-LEEDA Web site at www.leedafbi.org or contact the LifeLock Public Affairs Department at 480-457-2108. The summit is free and is open to chiefs, sheriffs, investigative supervisors, fraud unit investigators, patrol officers and community policing personnel.
