ACM SIGCOMM
Blue Coat Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:BCSI), the technology leader in Application Delivery Networking, today announced that its senior architect, Qing Li, will present his latest research on leveraging the power of parallel processing during the session, “Optimizing the BSD Routing System for Parallel Processing,” at an ACM SIGCOMM workshop on Aug. 21, 2009, in Barcelona, Spain.
Qing Li and co-presenter Kip Macy, developers and committers of the FreeBSD Project, will present the routing and flow processing architecture that they have implemented in the FreeBSD 8.0 kernel, which is scheduled for release in October 2009. The new architecture eliminates data dependencies among the OSI layers to facilitate parallel processing. The session will focus on the impact of this design on traffic flows and offer performance comparisons between the legacy architecture and the new one.
“The BSD routing kernel has remained relatively static over the last 15 years as architectures have changed dramatically, in particular, the transition to parallel processing,” said Qing Li, senior architect, Blue Coat Systems. “By creating a design within the kernel that reduces the data and processing dependencies among the layers, BSD can fully exploit the parallel processing advantages of modern commodity hardware to improve performance and drive down costs.”
Qing and Kip will present their research as part of the Programmable Routers for Extensible Services of Tomorrow (PRESTO) workshop during the conference. SIGCOMM is the flagship annual conference of the Special Interest Group on Data Communications, a special interest group of the Association for Computing Machinery.
Qing works on the design and development of Blue Coat Application Delivery Network technologies and is active in the open source community. Qing’s open source development work is partially sponsored by Blue Coat. In addition, he is a published author of five books. Most recently he co-authored with Jinmei Tatuya and Keiichi Shima two new derivative reference books on Internet Protocol version six (IPv6) core protocols, IPv6 Socket API Extensions: Programmer’s Guide and Mobile IPv6: Protocols & Implementation.
