Universidad de los Andes Deploys Cisco IP Telephony With IBM

The Universidad de los Andes in Chile selected IBM (NYSE: IBM) to implement a Cisco IP Telephony solution, making communication at the university more reliable and flexible while reducing costs. IBM provided all design, development and implementation services for the new system, including making improvements to the data network and installation of new IP phones and voice mail services. The new IP switch started with 70 IP phones, but now reaches 120 IP phones and supports another 120 analog phones on an existing switch, offering 100 percent convergence.

IP communications enable the transmission of voice, data and video on the same IP network, significantly reducing operating costs and facilitating more efficient and better organized network administration. For the university, the new technology provides benefits such as flexibility, making it easier to add extensions for new professors and moving extensions to different locations.

With this implementation, the university has reduced its operating costs and increased the productivity of its work groups. The technology allows it to better address seasonal peaks, such as the admission and enrollment process.
