Offered Under the Post Graduate Program in Energy Management

Gurgaon, India – September 10, 2009: The MDI School of Energy Management today announced that it has enhanced its Post Graduate Program in Energy Management, by the launch of a new course on ‘Smart Grids’ that has been developed in close collaboration with companies such as Infosys, Areva Group, Crompton Greaves, and BHEL who are actively working in this field.

The Ministry of Power, Government of India in its APDRP Scheme has highlighted the application of Smart Grids for efficient power generation and distribution in the country. At the present moment the power sector is plagued with various issues ranging from energy efficiency to tariff and pricing structures, and at the same time it also needs to evolve to encourage consumer involvement and effectively manage climate change challenges.

This new course on Smart Grids will cover recent concepts applicable to the power distribution system such as information technology, SCADA and network management solutions, bulk generation, high voltage transmission, bulk renewable generation, sub transmission, distribution systems, rural electrification, critical loads, market management, project financing. The pedagogy of the course is based on case studies on smart utilities.

Speaking on the course, Dr Atmanand, Dean, MDI, Gurgaon said, “The concept of a Smart Grid is somewhat novel in the Indian context. Broadly speaking, the term Smart Grid encompasses various components of the entire electricity supply chain which can be empowered by intelligence, like – smart sensors, smart devices, smart meters, smart everything. A Smart Grid is nothing but the existing electricity supply chain – generation, transmission, distribution on which digital technology is superimposed to make it more communicative and interactive with the IT system thus making the system more responsive, adaptive, and efficient.”

“Through this course we aim at bringing together the expertise and experience of companies that have actively been engaged in developing Smart Grids, sharing their best practices and learnings with students. We believe that by doing so, we will be able to enhance their understanding of Smart Grids and its complexities, as they are taught by some of the best minds in the industry.”

The course on Smart Grids in the Energy Management Program will also provide a platform to policy makers and utilities to join hands with participants for in-depth discussion on new concepts in the power sector.
