Google Announces Top 15 Gainers for the Week Ending September 16

Last Monday marked the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, and a number of the fastest-rising search queries this past week were variations of that date, as were [world trade center] and [twin towers]. Author [Salman Rushdie] was a search subject in part because of Pope Benedict’s controversial remarks about Muslims, which caused a fresh round of conservative Islamic criticism of both men. In a sad twist of events, reality TV star and all-around celebrity [Anna Nicole Smith] gave birth to Hannah on Sept. 7, and on Sept. 10, her 20-year-old son [Daniel Smith] died mysteriously after visiting them. Meanwhile, [Debra LaFave], the Tampa teacher under house arrest since a 2004 conviction of molesting a minor, appeared in a TV interview to defend herself.

Microsoft’s new [Zune] media player was in the news as the company announced more details prior to holiday selling season. Couch potatoes watched Tucker Carlson lose a round on [Dancing With the Stars], and reality TV star [Dog the Bounty Hunter], a.k.a. Duane Chapman, was arrested in Mexico on a technicality for a 2003 capture. And the bottom line was in the news, as California raised the [minimum wage] this week.
