After LED backlight modules took the LCD TV market by storm, LED backlight applications are also slipping into LCD monitors; industry players hope that the launch of these LED monitors will set off a positive purchase momentum in the overall LCD monitor market. According to WitsView’s survey, several vendors had already introduced LED monitors in 2008, but only a few high-end products were launched at the time, featuring RGB signals, high brightness and superior interface performance. However, at such high prices, those LED monitors did not see widespread adoption. Later, white-LEDs were gradually adopted in backlight modules – 2H09 LED monitor models are equipped with 16:9 aspect ratio, ideal for audiovisual entertainment; and even though the resolution and brightness were behind that of past models, these models stole the limelight with significantly improved contrast ratio and reaction time, as well as their ultra-slim profiles and energy-saving features.
The LED monitor sizes introduced by each vendor are closely linked to their respective panel makers’ price strategy. However, in terms of cost, LED backlight module still costs twice that of the CCFL alternative, with price increase directly proportional to the increase in size. Hence, even though LED products offer higher value, under concerns of high cost, their widespread adoption in the short-run is improbable. In light of this, to expand the market of LED monitors, it is absolutely crucial to narrow the price difference. Furthermore, as customers are becoming more price-sensitive, the concept of offering an ideally-suitable product at a reasonable price is gaining popularity, and the development of this trend is quite evident from the absence of some high-end applications in LED monitors.
