Real-World News, Musical Notes Define This Week’s Google Zeitgeist

This past week, people searching on Google.com closely followed several news stories: the tragic murders of several young [Amish] girls in Pennsylvania; the still-unfolding details about former Congressman [Mark Foley] ’s inappropriate contact with House pages; and the EEOC suit filed against [BJ's Warehouse] and two other companies on the grounds of racial discrimination.

But musical news and notes were also of interest to many, as James Blunt’s 2004 song [You're Beautiful] has become not only a staple for him, but an appealing parody for others; [Johnny Cash] continues producing even after his death (a new album based on his final sessions was announced this week); and Shakira’s [Hips Don't Lie] wins awards for best song and best video.

Two blonde celebrities were in the news: [Shanna Moakler], accused of hitting Paris Hilton (Moakler denies it); and the Czech [Tatana Kucharova], crowned the new Miss World. Finally, meet [Line Rider], a new time-waster that has found its way around the Net. (It’s an easy drawing game featuring a hapless sledder.)

For breaking news and obscure information alike, people around the world search on Google. What follows is a summary of Google Zeitgeist results for the top gainers on Google.com, when comparing search queries that have risen by a significant percentage for the week of October 1-7, 2006.
