Sprint Nextel Networks Fully Operational Less Than 24 Hours After 6.6 Earthquake Hits Hawaii

Less than 24 hours after a series of strong earthquakes near Kailua Kona on the west coast of the Big Island shut down Hawaii’s powergrid, Sprint Nextel reports that its networks are operating on a business as usual basis and all 13 of its Sprint and Nextel retail stores across the state are open.

As of 7:30 a.m. HT this morning, all of the Nextel National Network and 99 percent of the Nationwide Sprint PCS network were fully operational statewide. The company’s long distance network remained fully operational following the 6.6 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks.

“In times of emergencies like yesterday’s Kailua Kona earthquakes, our customers depend on their Sprint and Nextel service to help them communicate with family, friends, co-workers and customers,” commented Nonie Toledo, director, general business, Sprint Nextel. “Our network engineers and technicians have worked through the night to restore services to our customers.
