Seagate and FOSEC Encourage Employability Preparation

Seagate Technology (NYSE: STX) recently teamed up with Foyle School and Employer Connections (FOSEC) to proactively encourage local schools to take educational visits to Seagate’s Springtown facility. Seagate was keen to ensure it could assist schools in facilitating certain requirements for the new curriculum entitlements pertaining to employability. Careers teachers from thirteen local secondary schools were invited to a think tank day at the plant to get their views on the package that Seagate had put together and to let the company know what each of them would expect from a site visit. The day was a huge success, and a series of visits has now been scheduled for the schools commencing this month and running until March 2007.

Each visit will consist of an overview presentation explaining what part of the hard disc drive is manufactured at the company’s Springtown facility, followed by a short tour. Some interactive elements will be incorporated into the presentation to make the visit more hands-on and interesting for the students. During each visit, information will be provided, which teachers and students can use towards the employability element of their education, outlining the various jobs and career paths available within the company, and showing students that there are many different paths to success.

Some of Seagate’s employees will act as role models during the visits, giving a brief outline of their career progression within the company and a typical day in their job before answering any questions students may have. Where feasible, each school will be matched with a past pupil now working at the plant, in the hope students will relate to them more.

Tara Hutton, Adopt-a-Class Programme Manager at FOSEC says, “We are delighted that Seagate has offered to carry out this programme in conjunction with Adopt-a-Class. Seagate has always been keen to help our local schools and we are delighted to approach this project with them in such a planned and proactive way. The fact that they are working towards tying in with current education stipulations further highlights Seagate’s commitment to Business Education linkages.”
