Gateway Introduces AMD Opteron™ Processors to Its Server Line With New
Dual-Core 1U, 2U and 3U Rack Servers
Beginning today, Gateway’s professional customers now have more choices in powerful yet energy-efficient servers, with the availability of three new rackmount systems featuring second generation AMD® Opteron™ processors. It is the first time Gateway has offered AMD (NYSE: AMD) processors in its server line. They will be on display at the industry’s premier virtualization technology conference, VMware’s VMworld 2006, Nov. 7-9 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, in booth # 503. The new dual-core 1U, 2U and 3U rackmount systems round out Gateway’s line of new servers, which were unveiled in September. The Opteron-based servers will be built at Gateway’s U.S.-based configure-to-order facility in Nashville.
Featuring Gateway’s exclusive industrial design, the new 1U, 2U and 3U servers include leading serviceability elements, integrated RAID, Gateway Lights Out (GLO) system management and optional low-cost remote control K/V/M (keyboard, video, mouse). They also support both SAS and SATA II hard drives in the same system.
Designed to handle a wide variety of business applications, the powerful technologies and scalability features make them ideal for large, demanding office environments, but they are also cost-effective solutions for small- and medium-sized businesses.
“We’re pleased to round out our server line with AMD processors, giving our customers maximum flexibility and choice combined with leading-edge innovation, quality and features,” said Tim Diefenthaler, Gateway senior director, professional product management. “We look forward to expanding our server line even further, bringing additional Opteron-based servers to our customers in the near future.”
“We’re delighted to have Gateway expand its AMD relationship to include servers based on industry-standard AMD Opteron processors,” said Randy Allen, corporate vice president, AMD Server and Workstation Division. “The AMD Opteron processor provides next-generation features including hardware-assisted AMD Virtualization™ and energy-efficient DDR2 memory. They’re also designed for seamless upgradeability to quad-core computing. AMD64 technology continues to be adopted by infrastructure providers who want to give customers the broadest variety of options. We look forward to working together to bring systems to market that offer new levels of performance-per-watt and energy efficiency.”
