Seagate Helps Expand Girls’ Career Horizons
Seagate Technology will bring the first ‘Expanding Your Horizons’ conference, outside of the United States, to Northern Ireland on Saturday 11th November at Lumen Christi College. The conference, aimed at young women in Year 10, is designed to highlight the opportunities for women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
In the past, the educational focus was on encouraging girls to consider studying science subjects. Today, girls are often choosing to study these subjects but females remain underrepresented in careers that utilize them. As well as encouraging girls to study the subjects, Seagate’s Expanding Your Horizons conference aims to encourage girls to put that knowledge into practice and consider the wide range of careers that are available to them through study of the sciences.
In the U.S., Seagate is a keen supporter of the ‘Expanding Your Horizons’ network, which has been running conferences there for over thirty years. As part of the partnership between the two organisations, it was decided to instigate the first international conference. For Seagate, the obvious place to start was on the doorstep of its European plants here in Springtown and Limavady.
The decision on venue and educational partner to facilitate the conference was made when the North West’s Lumen Christi College was awarded Specialist Science School status earlier this year. This business-education partnership expects more than 100 participants from schools across the North West to attend the event. The conference’s attractive programme includes an inspirational keynote address, eleven fun interactive workshops, and a careers panel of female role models who will share their career experiences.
