Holiday Food And Shopping, Celebrity Controversies Foremost In The Weekly Google Zeitgeist

As Americans celebrated a national day of eating and giving thanks (not always in that order), a few of the of the pastimes associated with the fourth Thursday in November also appeared as popular search queries on Google.com. Not surprisingly, the holiday called [Thanksgiving] and its signature entree [turkey] ranked high this week, as did the classic side dish [green bean casserole]. But even higher on the list was the newish name for the day after Thanksgiving: [black friday], which signals the beginning of the holiday shopping season in earnest. In this vein, people were searching for deals at several of the major consumer electronics retailers including [circuit city] and [best buy], where clearly many shoppers hoped to find the Nintendo [wii] game console.

Holidays may come and go, but celebrities have a way of always being front and center. This week’s boldfacers include former Seinfeldian [michael richards] (a.k.a. [kramer]), who lashed out at a heckler with racist remarks, and later publicly apologized for them, and TV star [kelly ripa], who found herself in a flap with talk show host Rosie O’Donnell after Ripa’s on-air exchange with singer Clay Aiken, who was subbing for her co-host Regis Philbin. (Rosie said Kelly was being homophobic, Kelly denied it, and Clay kept mum.)

For breaking news and obscure information alike, people around the world search on Google. What follows is a summary of Google Zeitgeist results for the top gainers on Google.com, when comparing search queries that have risen by a significant percentage for the week of November 19-25, 2006.
