Richard H. Lampman, Director of HP Labs, to Retire in 2007 After 35 Years with HP

HP today announced that Richard H. (Dick) Lampman, senior vice president of research at HP and director of HP Labs, has decided to retire in 2007. As director of HP Labs, Lampman, 61, has had responsibility for the research activities in six research labs around the world, with the objectives of providing leading-edge technologies to HP’s current businesses and creating new technology-based business opportunities. Lampman has established HP Labs as a world leader in areas of research including global utility computing, trusted systems and security, imaging and printing, technology for developing economies and quantum science.

“It has been a privilege to work closely with Dick during the past several years,” said Shane Robison, executive vice president and chief strategy and technology officer, HP. “Under his leadership, HP Labs has played an integral role in transforming HP from an instrument- and hardware-based company to one focused on software, systems and services. He leaves behind a world-class research organization focused on creating exciting new opportunities for HP.”

Lampman joined HP in 1971 and held a series of positions in HP’s measurement and computing businesses before joining HP Labs in 1981. From 1988 to 1992, he was director of the Computer Systems Lab, where he managed the development of PA-Wide Word, the architecture that became the basis for the HP and Intel alliance to build a common 64-bit architecture, which resulted in the Intel® Itanium® processor.
