Google Announces Top 10 Gainers for the Week Ending January 6

The turn of the calendar [new year 2007] was the fastest-rising query on Google.com this past week. Presumably people were looking for predictions, ways to celebrate, and ways to recover. But almost as high on the list, and with many more search term variations, was for news about, or the video of, the [saddam hanging], which took place Dec. 29. Otherwise, sports-related queries dominated the list this week: [darrent williams], the Denver Broncos’ cornerback who was killed in a drive-by shooting on Jan. 1; [nick saban], who left the pro Miami Dolphins to coach the Crimson Tide at the University of Alabama for $4 million a year; the mixed martial arts event Ultimate Fighting Championship [ufc], which held a sellout December 30 event in Las Vegas, much to the thrill of its extreme fans; and underdog [boise state], the football team that routed Oklahoma in the Jan. 1 Fiesta Bowl.

The only entertainment figure in the top 10 this week was [nikki cox], the “Las Vegas” actress who married comedian Jay Mohr on Dec. 29. Desk potatoes were paying attention to the news that [windows defender], Microsoft’s free anti-spyware software, no longer supports Windows 2000.

And high school students and their families were looking ahead as the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid [fafsa] became available for filing on Jan. 1. (It’s a significant determinant of the amount of tuition each student is expected to pay for college.) Clearly, the new year is already so action-packed that lots of us just want to find a [spa].
