Serving Latin America and The Caribbean With Innovative Technology From Motorola

DHL, the world’s leading express delivery and logistics company, has announced the implementation of advanced wireless technology from Motorola, used by its couriers in collecting, registering and distributing its customers’ packages. To provide customers with faster and more effective service, DHL is introducing Motorola’s HC700 mobile computing devices – equipped with cutting-edge technology – to be used in the Caribbean and Latin America.

“This new device will allow us to exchange information rapidly and more efficiently within our own network, enabling fast and transparent package tracking for customers,” said German Valencia, CIO of DHL Express International Americas, which includes Canada and the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. The Motorola HC700 handheld device combines WiFi technology and Bluetooth communications capability, as well as barcode scanning, image-capturing and electronic-signature capture capabilities, allowing DHL couriers to receive and transmit information in real time.

“The HC700, which operates on the Microsoft Windows® platform, will greatly assist DHL operators when they deliver and receive packages. When the package is scanned, the data is immediately sent to DHL’s global information systems. That way, the courier does not have to stop on his way back to his vehicle to process the information. The courier simply returns to the vehicle and continues his route, thereby increasing the speed and efficiency of the deliveries,” said Oscar Rojas, VP & General Manager of Motorola Networks & Enterprise Business for the Latin American and Caribbean region.

Implementation of the technology was already successfully completed in November 2006 in DHL Guatemala, the country that served as the site for the pilot program. It will next be brought to Peru and Ecuador in early 2007 and later to the remaining countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, where implementation is expected to conclude during the second quarter of 2007. DHL US is also implementing the HC700 scanners, with plans for completion by third quarter 2007.
