Seagate Awards $20,000 in Grants to 12 Science Teachers in St. Vrain and Boulder Valley School Districts

Seagate Technology (NYSE:STX) recently awarded 12 grants of up to $2,000 each to middle- and high-school science teachers in the St. Vrain Valley and Boulder Valley School Districts to be used for hands-on science programs that support classroom curriculum. The Seagate Technology – Science Teacher Grant program is designed to support teachers’ efforts to bring science to life in the classroom through hands-on applications of scientific principles. Areas of science considered in this grant program included: biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, astronomy and space travel, meteorology and oceanography.

“While the ultimate goal of this program is to educate and inspire young people to excel in science – and perhaps pursue a degree in engineering – the first step is providing talented and enthusiastic teachers with the resources they need to make this happen,” said Andy Davis, Seagate vice president of design engineering. “We’re pleased to offer such resources to the teachers in our community.”

The Seagate Technology – Science Teacher Grant program was awarded to programs or projects that present an innovative teaching approach that addresses student need. Applicants were asked to outline a clearly defined process to evaluate success in areas such as student understanding of scientific principles and achievement of academic and motivational goals. Teachers were also asked to submit realistic timelines for accomplishing their projects and an itemized budget.

Grant recipients are: Michele Bennett of Flagstaff Academy; Benjamin Boyer of Boulder High School; Scott Brungardt of Erie Middle School; Gwenda Dumbauld of Westview Middle School; Tammy Foley of Westview Middle School; Steve Goldhaber of Peak to Peak Charter; Matt Grigaitis of Nederland High School; Tug Levy of Ute Creek Secondary Academy; David Martinez of Boulder Preparatory High School; Eileen Miller of Peak to Peak Charter; Dr. Helen Petach of Fairview High School; and Peter Teasdale of Summit Middle School.
