Automation across the entire value chain and environmental protection promote the shift in production
“As worldwide leading industrial equipment manufacturer boasting an integrated portfolio, we are on a profitable growth course in all technological segments. With UGS’s PLM software technology, we are also opening up an entirely new dimension in digital engineering and data management. This will enable innovative automation for our customers throughout their entire value chain”, stated Helmut Gierse, President of the Siemens Automation and Drives Group (A&D). “Besides the advances in automation, it is also legal rules and regulations in the field of environmental protection, along with the rising cost of raw materials and energy that are promoting the shift in industry”, stated Joergen Ole Haslestad, President of the Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S). In 2006, I&S generated sales of approx. 2 billion euros selling plants, products and solutions for the protection of the environment and the efficient use of resources. Said Haslestad: “In the environmental balance, the industry is making progress mainly by applying new processes that optimize the entire value chain.”
At Hanover Fair 2007, Siemens will be demonstrating once again that the company is shaping worldwide technological development in production. Integrated systems for design, production and service, real-time data transparency and enhanced energy and raw material efficiency are the key trends which Siemens applies with a view to increasing the productivity of industrial companies and the efficiency of infrastructure projects. Highlights at Hanover Fair 2007 will include the launch of release 7 of the Simatic PCS 7 distributed control system, the extended portfolio in sensorics, communication and safety, as well as the latest generation of energy-efficient converters and drives. Systems driven by electric motors account for almost 70 per cent of the power consumed in industry. According to Gierse, the use of innovative motors in Europe could save over 40 TWh of electricity, or approximately three billion euros a year.
Siemens A&D is systematically broadening its automation portfolio. “To create truly efficient automation solutions, one needs to have complete mastery of all segments: from product and plant engineering to maintenance, from IT and control systems to energy and drive technologies”, continued Gierse. The acquisition of UGS has brought Siemens a decisive step further along this path because the UGS software portfolio provides support for customer-related innovation at all levels of the value chain. To the companies concerned, this is reflected in reduced production costs, improved product quality, shorter time-to-market and increased flexibility.
