Natasha Hamilton, former atomic kitten, launches search for nation’s favourite words

At an event to coincide with World Book Day, former Atomic Kitten Natasha Hamilton and BT’s Openreach division today announced a nationwide search for the UK’s top 10 favourite words in support of children’s communication charity I CAN. Completion of a mile-long online “Wall of Words”, created from submissions by members of the public, will unlock a £50,000 donation to I CAN by Openreach, BT’s local network business.

By logging on to www.wallofwords.co.uk and registering their favourite word, members of the public will be contributing towards the 50,000 word target, and supporting I CAN’s work to support children’s speech, language and communication development. “Mummy”, “orange” and “fettucini” are three words already in the frame.

Dr Tanya Byron, clinical psychologist and television presenter said “mummy” was “one of the first words spoken to me by the two people I love most in the world.” Emmerdale actress Lucy Pargeter chose “orange” because “I like the way your mouth has to move when you say it – and nothing rhymes with it.” Comedienne Catherine Tate selected “fettucini” because “when I say it, it sounds like I can speak Italian.” As for Natasha Hamilton “My favourite word is ‘family’…. It is the epitome of who I am. It symbolises responsibility and hope, but above everything else it brings me all the joy in the world!”

Donors will be asked to give a reason for choosing their word and can dedicate it to a loved one or a treasured memory for anyone to enjoy. Dawn James, Openreach communications director said she was delighted that the division, which plays a vital role in helping adults communicate with each other, is also able to help youngsters learn these important skills.“The ‘Wall of Words’ is part of Openreach’s education programme in support of I CAN’s Make Chatter Matter campaign, which helps build solid foundations of communications skills for children giving them the best possible start in life,” she added.
