Organic Motion Unveils First Major Breakthrough in Motion Capture Technology in More Than 20 Years
New Real-Time Markerless Motion Capture System Reduces Costs, Time; Affordable for Studios of All Sizes
Game Developers Conference 2007
North Hall, Booth #5603
Organic Motion, Inc. today announced the industry’s first full body markerless motion-capture system, the biggest advancement in the industry in two decades. Functioning without the use of markers or body suits, Organic Motion’s technology improves every step of the animation process by producing immediately usable clean data that can be imported into Autodesk’s leading real time character animation application, Autodesk MotionBuilder software, as well as any custom software applications. Organic Motion will be exhibiting (North Hall, Booth #5603) and executives will be on hand during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, March 7-9.
Existing motion capture technologies contain inherent shortcomings and high operating costs that limit their usefulness to many projects. These systems require a trained operating technician, subjects to wear cumbersome body suits and set up and calibration may take hours. Resulting output from current systems then require many hours of cleaning to correct data occlusions and inconsistencies before the information can be used to create professional animations.
“Organic Motion has invented a new way for computers to see people,” said Andrew Tschesnok, CEO of Organic Motion. “We track humans in a manner that is much more sophisticated than that of current mo-cap technology – we have fundamentally improved the entire character animation process. Countless projects will benefit from our system’s lifelike, 3-D real-time graphic information and its unparalleled ease of use with major animation programs.”
Organic Motion’s patent pending system captures human movement naturally by tracking the entire person. The system generates industry standard bone position and orientation data, while also producing two unique data views: 3-D mesh and surface texture. Organic Motion’s output can then be delivered in production-ready form to Autodesk MotionBuilder or custom software.
Organic Motion’s system considerably reduces demands on time, resources and equipment costs associated with most motion capture projects. Benefits of the technology allow its users to:
Eliminate expensive body suits and operating engineer costs since artists themselves can run the system easily
Cut development time because human motion data is processed in a significantly improved manner that eliminates common occlusion problems inherent to traditional motion capture systems
Do away with ‘data cleaning’ time and post-production costs because the system generates clean, production-ready tracking information from the first take to the last
Evaluate any capture immediately with instant feedback, avoiding lengthy delays between re-shoots
Continuously switch between capture and editing modes in a seamless and steady process
Quickly set up and calibrate the system
The Organic Motion system, scheduled to launch in Q3, 2007, is currently available in beta versions. Interested parties are encouraged to visit Organic Motion at the Game Developers Conference to schedule a technology demonstration and meet the design team.
