Fusion of Theory and Practice at APOGEE 2K7
Mr. Vinod Sawhny, CEO, Bharti Retail (Pvt) Ltd., inaugurated APOGEE 2007 (A Professions Oriented Gathering Over Educational Experience)—the five-day long (21- 24 March 2007) 25th All India Academic Festival of BITS Pilani this morning. Mr. Sawhny, an alumnus of BITS Pilani (1975-80 batch), in his inaugural address asserted that in another five years India will emerge the second largest economy in the world, just next to USA. Reflecting upon his personal achievements, he said that to make India the second largest economy in the world we need to identify opportunities and put our resources into use to make it a reality. He emphasized on the need for students to become well aware of the happenings around them. He also elaborated upon how technology is going to be used in tandem with the growing economy to serve the needs of common people. Appealing to the budding engineers to reinvent leadership to mach the growth of the country, he defined leadership as “empowering others to reach their full potential”. He showed optimism that BITS students will play a major role in leading India to a developed country.
Prof. L. K. Maheshwari, Vice-chancellor, BITS Pilani, in his address congratulated Mr. Vinod Sahani for his exemplary achievements and said that he was a role model for BITS students. He also congratulated the office bearers of BITS students’ Association for making APOGEE an international event from this year. Six students from abroad are participation in this function. Prof. Maheshwari discussed the significance of this year’s theme of APOGEE—DHITI (Reflecting Intelligence)—by tracing its origin in the ancient Indian literature and advised the students to understand the meaning of this word in true spirit.
Mr. Yashvir Singh, President, BITS students’ Association in his welcome address, put forth the main objective of this event – to showcase how BITS has come up with the application of science and technology in finding out solutions for practical problems. APOGEE provides a platform to bring out innovative and creative ideas . Mr. Ajit Pratap Singh, General Secretary, BITS students’ Association proposed the vote of thanks.
In this five day long function Associations of different disciplines have put up their ideas on display and have also organized seminars and lectures by eminent personalities. A large number of students from institutions across the country and six students from abroad are participating in different events organized in this function. About 160 projects are being showcased at the festival; to name a few :
Micro Mouse – A completely automated robot with AI that can find its way to the specified destination in an unknown area, remember different routes, from a map, can compute the shortest path so as to minimize travel time.
Automatic Railway Platform Cleaner – A low price railway platform cleaner which consumes very less power as compared to the normal vacuum cleaners and moves automatically avoiding obstacles in its parts.
BITSIMO : An indigenously designed semi-robot assistant, capable of performing a plethora of functions ranging from escorting, guarding, scouting, path tracking and mapping, etc.
Paradox: A LAN software which extends the editing capabilities of an excel file to multiple users who will be available over the network.
Tranmogrifier: An innovative product for online shopping which helps the customer enter and buy products just with the press of a button as soon as he sees the corresponding sign board. Additional features are security, extension of the device for personal identification, etc.
