Narus Announces Carrier-Class Wireless Security Solution
Leading Provider of Security Software for the World’s Largest IP Networks Unveils First Wireless Security Solution to Monitor Core of Wireless Network
Narus, Inc. today announced its NarusInsight™ Secure Suite (NSS) Wireless module, a mobile security product that detects and mitigates wireless-specific attacks from various devices and at different levels of the network architecture. The first company to announce a mobile-specific “core” security product to market, Narus leverages its expertise in IP network security to address the pain points in wireless carrier networks. By implementing at the core, Narus’ patented technology can monitor all IP traffic and correlate across every link and element on the network, offering far greater visibility into the traffic. This visibility allows NSS to detect the widest range of wireless and wireline attacks, detect them earlier and with greater accuracy, and scale to meet the rigorous demands of carrier-class networks.
Mobile networks have, until recently, been unique from fixed-line networks by virtue of their “closed” network architecture. Each carrier has regulated their network technology as well as any end-point devices connected to it. This closed architecture has shielded these networks from many of the threats and attacks endured by their “open” fixed-line counterparts. However, due to the rise in popularity of devices such as wireless data PC cards and PDAs running Microsoft Windows, wireless networks — although enabling great convenience — are now subject to vulnerabilities and attacks akin to those perpetrated on fixed-line networks. In addition, wireless operators also face a host of attacks that are specifically targeted to mobile devices and networks. Such attacks include handset battery draining, man in the middle, location privacy, session hijacking, cloning, or inter-technology roaming attacks. As fixed-line operators have learned, the best way to protect carrier-class networks is in the core.
“The evolution of mobile networks to open architectures has introduced a host of new challenges to wireless carriers. Customers are accustomed to carriers effectively managing seamless interoperability and portability from one carrier to another. Add to this the complexity of power considerations, mobility issues, and the problems associated with the interaction of multiple standards and technologies, and wireless networks have become extremely vulnerable,” said Albert Lin, analyst, American Technology Research. “Wireless carriers can address these challenges quickly by learning lessons from wireline carriers, and investing in network protection solutions such as NSS that sit at the core of their networks.”
“NSS is the solution of choice for securing many of the largest, most complex IP networks in the world,” said Steve Bannerman, vice president of marketing and product management at Narus. “Carriers have consistently stated that enterprise products are insufficient in securing carrier-class networks, and wireless networks are no different. Expanding our leadership position into the world of wireless IP is a natural evolution for NSS. The sheer complexity of wireless networks demands a proven, flexible and truly scalable carrier-class product. Now our customers can protect their converging wireline and wireless networks with a single, integrated security solution.”
Initial customer availability of NSS’ new wireless module is targeted for Q4 2007.
