BEA Systems Appoints Telecom Visionary Eric Burger as Deputy CTO
BEA Systems, Inc., a world leader in enterprise and communications infrastructure software, today announced the appointment of Eric Burger as Deputy Chief Technology Officer, overseeing BEA’s overall technology strategies and standards participation in the telecommunications industry. In this role, Burger will help lead BEA’s efforts to drive SOA adoption in telecom networks.
“The appointment of Eric Burger signifies BEA’s ongoing commitment to continuing to strengthen its position in the telecom industry and helping to establishing BEA as a dominant provider
of telecom SOA solutions to network operators and service providers,” said Rob Levy, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, BEA Systems. “Eric brings a wealth of telecom industry leadership, knowledge and expertise to BEA, which can help to accelerate the adoption of BEA’s telecom products and solutions.”
“I am looking forward to evangelizing BEA’s telecom SOA solutions leveraging the BEA WebLogic Communications Platform and AquaLogic product families,” said Burger. “Telecom SOA is a critical ‘missing link’ to integrate next-generation networks, such as IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) and service delivery platforms (SDP) with existing OSS/BSS and IT systems. Telecom SOA can help operators and service providers accelerate service creation, delivery and monetization, using a very cost-effective services layer architecture.”
Prior to joining BEA Systems, Burger was CTO for Cantata Technology, where he oversaw corporate research, cross-product architecture, intellectual property generation and standards initiatives for the company. Among his ten issued U.S. patents and numerous pending patents, Burger’s most notable invention to date is widely considered to be his SIP-Controlled Multifunction Media Server which is designed to embody the applications and services infrastructure design model and to bring the web development model to real- time, interactive applications, integral to the telecommunications space.
Additionally, Burger presently serves on the Board of Directors of the SIP Forum and IMS Forum. He contributes to and holds leadership positions in several standards bodies, has written most of the SIP media RFC’s in the IETF, and has contributed to VoiceXML and CCXML in the W3C. Burger has taught at George Mason University and George Washington University and holds degrees from MIT, Catholic University of Leuven and Illinois Institute of Technology.
