Miejskie Przedsiębiorstwo Komunikacyjne selects Tyco Fire & Integrated Solutions, in partnership with Alcatel-Lucent, to design and deploy an Advanced New Traffic Control System
Miejskie Przedsiębiorstwo Komunikacyjne – Lodz Sp. z o.o has selected Tyco Fire & Integrated Solutions, in partnership with Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE:ALU), to design and deploy a sophisticated traffic control system that will enable the region’s tram system to move through key sections in Lodz with fewer stops, helping to provide a faster and more reliable service for its customers. Once the urban portion of the project is completed, work will begin on expanding the scope of the network to include the cities of Zgierz and Pabianice into the Lodz Regional Tram (LRT) system. There will also be an option to connect the LRT with the Ozorków tram line.
“The Traffic Control System will allow us to reduce the tram travel time between key parts of the city, as the trams will be given priority over other forms of traffic,” said Ryszard Kowalczyk, Head of the Miejskie Przedsiębiorstwo Komunikacyjne Traffic Monitoring Unit. “The IT infrastructure used for the interconnection of adjacent crossroads near the LRT track will improve the road throughput. The system as a whole will help to contribute to a reduction of traffic jams and will increase the smoothness of traffic. The ability to closely monitor the LRT will allow us to react rapidly and effectively should an incident arise.”
Tyco Fire & Integrated Solutions, part of Tyco Fire & Security will engineer, install and integrate the system which will cover more than 60 major intersections between the Helenowek and Chocianowice sections of the city. The modernised traffic signalling will be integrated and connected to a central SCATS™ server, which will manage the traffic and give priority to the LTR. The SCATS™ system analyses traffic parameters and, based on the data it receives, controls the length of the cycles, phases and offsets of the light signaling controllers assigned to it. It can immediately react to the changing traffic conditions to ensure optimum operation parameters of light signaling, helping to provide smoother traffic flow patterns.
