The UK’s favourie word is…love, actually!
Women prefer love but men still think size is everything, according to a nationwide search for the UK’s favourite word. Sponsored by Openreach, a BT business, the poll revealed that “love” was the overall number one choice, five times more popular with women than men who put “antidisestablishmentarianism” in top place.
Children’s communication charity I CAN created the online “Wall of Words” which attracted more than 50,000 contributions from members of the public. For each word submitted, Openreach contributed £1 to I CAN, which works to develop speech, language and communication skills for all children with a particular focus on children who find communication hard.
Other words to make the top ten chart include “family”, “chocolate”, holiday” and “hope”. Men put “football” in their sixth spot but it failed to make the “premier league.” Leading linguist Professor David Crystal said: “It’s heart-warming to see that, despite all our daily pressures and worries, so many positive emotional words are turning up in this list. It seems we’re not just a romantic people – we’re playful too.”
