Ford Designers Lend Talent And Inspiration To Students In Unique Automotive Design Program

Showcasing their best designs today, Pontiac students will be recognized for their design achievements in an intensive 10-week automotive design program taught by Ford Motor Company designers. Since late January, Pontiac teens have been hard at work learning about what it takes to become an automotive designer with hands-on art lessons from Ford designers as part of Ford’s ongoing Youth Enrichment Program. Students interested in art were selected to participate in the weekly after-school program and today display their accomplishments.

“Our intent is to provide these students with the tools and guidance to develop their skills and interest in design, encouraging them to pursue a college degree and hopefully a career in automotive design,” says Peter Horbury, executive director of Design, North America. During the program, Ford designers and their composite class of middle and high school art students have met to explore basic and advanced drawing techniques, forms, color and the fundamentals of automotive design. Each week, designers assign homework while reviewing each student’s work at the start of the next class and provide individual art direction to those who may now see automotive design as a viable career option.

During the final session of the program, students will review their artwork with Ford designers and hear from representatives from Detroit’s College for Creative Studies – all with the intent to encourage the students to pursue their dreams in art and design. Students will be presented with certificates for completing the design program and four specialized awards will be given, honoring exceptional design talent among the group.
