AT&T’S Wireless Unit Completes Two-Year $1.3 Billion Investment to Expand and Enhance Los Angeles Area Network

Cingular Wireless, the nation’s largest wireless carrier and now part of the new AT&T, invested almost $1.3 billion — or the equivalent of $1.8 million every day for two years — upgrading and expanding service in Greater Los Angeles since 2005. The local investment was part of the wireless company’s estimated $6 billion national network capital expenditure program during 2006.

Last year, AT&T’s wireless unit in Los Angeles built 257 new cell sites, expanded coverage and enhanced network capacity. The company has added more than five new cell sites every week over the past two years for a total of almost 560 new sites in the area. As a result, AT&T’s ALLOVER™ network* — the largest digital voice and data network — has grown bigger and better in Southern California.

“The past two years were unprecedented — investing almost $1.3 billion to deliver a quality wireless experience to our customers here,” said Andy Shibley, vice president and general manager for the company’s Greater LA market. “Our wireless network is world class and second to none. The major expansion we completed was an extraordinary achievement that enables us to provide exceptional service for our customers today and into the future.”

Areas where a majority of the service improvements took place include Metropolitan Los Angeles, Orange County around South Coast Plaza, Pismo Beach along the coast highways, and the Inland Empire from Temecula to Hesperia.
