Maruti Launches A3 Segment SX4 Premium Sedan

Maruti Udyog announced the launch of their A3 premium segment sedan SX4 across 20 cities in the country over two days starting yesterday. The A3 segment has shown the highest growth rate during the last financial year of 55.8 per cent against an overall growth of 22 per cent for passenger cars.

This is Maruti’s foray into this segment after seven years. Earlier they had launched the not so successful Baleno in this segment. As has become a norm with most new automobile launches, the bar for each segment and sub-segment is being pushed ever upwards with regards to styling, performance, comfort, features and safety, Maruti claims that their new offering in the A3 segment has the above attributes of A4 and premium segment cars of the others.

As also is the norm, given the Indian demographics, Maruti is targeting the young man who wants to upgrade to the higher segment once he has passed on milestones like purchase of his first car and a house. Maruti is positioning the car as a ‘manly’ car. Maruti plans to lure in the customers who were looking at other brands in this segment.

The SX4 is Maruti’s second global offering after the very successful Swift, and has been launched first in India, even before being launched in Japan or Europe. What is also a first is that the engine, which Maruti claims has the performance of a A4 segment car, is being launched globally with the SX4 in India first.
