Nokia receives Excellence in Exports Award

Nokia India today received the ‘Excellence in Exports’ award at the National Telecom Awards for 2007 organised by Telecom Equipment Manufacturers’ Association (TEMA). The prestigious award was handed over to Mr. Sachin Saxena, Director Operations, Nokia India by Chief Guest Dr. Shakeel Ahmed, Honourable Minister of State for Communications & IT at a ceremony organised at the India Habitat Centre. The award also marks the celebration of the World Telecom and Information Society Day by recognizing companies that have contributed to the growth of the telecom industry in India.

Speaking at the event, Sachin Saxena, Director Operations, Nokia India said, “It is a moment of pride for all of us at Nokia. We thank TEMA for recognizing our efforts of being the first company to set up telecom manufacturing in India for both mobile devices and network infrastructure. While our efforts will continue to delight our customers with products that are designed to suit their lifestyle and budget needs, it is awards like these that give us the impetus to continuously reach out and achieve higher standards of quality and delivery.”

The award was adjudged by an eminent panel comprising of office bearers from reputed industry organisations like Department of Telecom, MTNL, BSNL, TEC, PWC and TEMA. Other awards distributed at the event were for Excellence in Research and Development, Excellence in Equipment Manufacturing, Excellence in Innovation and Excellence in Managed Services and Solutions.

The Nokia manufacturing facility was formally inaugurated in March 2006 and has played a pivotal role in enabling Chennai to become the telecommunications manufacturing hub of the country. Located in Sriperumbudur, Chennai, it is Nokia’s fifteenth production facility globally and has been created in line with Nokia’s global philosophy of developing world class manufacturing systems that enable best-in-class quality, lowest cost, world class responsiveness, just in time delivery and a challenging and joyful work environment.

The unit has already achieved the distinction of producing more than 25 million handsets in the first year of operation with 20% of handsets being exported to ten South East Asian countries along with countries in Middle East and Africa.

The Nokia Telecom Park is spread over 210 acres and has 7 global component manufacturers already signed up and expected to commence operations within the Park by mid 2007. These include Salcomp, Aspocomp, Foxconn, Perlos, Laird, Jabil and Wintek. The Nokia Telecom Park has the potential to employ 20,000 people by 2008 when it is fully operational.
